http://atoday.com/

Adventist Today has learned that a preliminary plan to reduce the General Conference subsidy for Loma Linda University from a little over $10 million to a little more than $2 million is being considered by General Conference administrators.

And all that money going to the SDA General Conference....

Seventh-day Adventist church members would be much better off if they kept 90% at the local church level to use for local church, school and missions support, and just passed 10% on the the conference behemouth for "administrative overhead".

... or the individual churches could just join Mission Catalyst and have congregational SDA churches.

I tried to read more but one has to be a member to read any more than what they have on the front.

Gilbert,

The GC is tightening its belt in a hiring freeze as well. Furthermore, GC travel budgets have been reduced by 20 percent and some forthcoming executive meetings will be hosted at the GC instead of other cities or countries. Union College had only one theology graduate last year. Moreover, SDA theology majors are increasingly required to take another major or minor in another field to better ensure finding a job after graduation. Looks like the SDA golden days are over when most students wanted to have a denominational career.

Dennis, does this mean that the Mission Spotlight folks will have to cut back on their plush travel accomodations at 5-star hotels and start sleeping with the actual missionaries at the mission compounds that they are reporting on. I know for a fact that it really irked the missionaries at some of the sites they would visit to report on.

How sad that they will have to live on the same standard as the people actually doing the work!

I was visiting some SDA family for Thanksgiving last weekend. Went to an SDA church, where their conference had a video about the importance of paying tithe, saying, "If you pay tithe, God will bless you." (barf!)

I guess this the reason for the video.

I wonder if there will be any layoffs at llu? I have a cousin who works for the pharmacy department. He hasn't said anything, so hopefully his job will be fine.

Gilbert,

I am well familiar with the Southern Union founders/entrepeneurs of Mission Spotlight. It was basically a family business enterprise that the SDA Church would hopefully appreciate by purchasing their videos. It was creatively designed to replace the old Sabbath School Missions Quarterly that was typically read each week from the pulpit. It was really the immediate family members of the Southern Union Conference PR director who pioneered this enterprise. I well remember those short, boring mission stories from that magazine in my youth. Oscar Heinrich and family worked hard to make Mission Spotlight acceptable throughout the North American Division.

Oh yes, we all hailed from North Dakota (smile). When I was in the Southern Union, all the administrators were of German descent except the Union treasurer. So, they affectionately called Elder Whitehead "Weisskopf" to make everyone German. Some Adventists in North Dakota even claimed that God spoke German (e.g., Martin Luther's German Bible). Shamelessly, I too stayed in plush hotels while in SDA employment--even enjoyed an excursion to the Bahamas and deep-sea fishing with the "brethern." BTW, we staunch vegetarians gave away all our catch at the end of our deep-sea fishing expedition. After all, the food that Jesus and the apostles ate was sinful in our warped minds.

He doesn't? Vas ist das?

God chose Luther because only a German could be bullheaded enough to refuse to back down when the entire world was against him.
