I am really getting tired of seeing satan's name capitalized. We capitalize names but I refuse to show any kind of respect or acknowledgement of any kind for the name satan or lucifer or whatever other name he (not He)is called.

Other names in this category are adventists, egw, general conference, clear word bible...you get he idea. When you see any of this in my posts, please note that it is not a spelling error. It is an intentional and deliberate attempt to downgrade the subject in question as I do not feel respect is warrented.

On the other hand, words like God, Creator, Bible, etc should always be capitalized as it shows a large amount of respect.

I'm ranting, I know. Had to get it off my chest as it has been bugging me a lot lately.

Surfy, I quit capitalizing clear word a long time ago. I also quit calling it Bible as it is not a Bible. I capitalize all names, because thery are names, but I can understand why you do not and there will be no complaint from me.

As one who is compulsive about correct spelling and grammar, I am objective with capitalization - names are generally capitalized regardless of the level of respect intended. However, I don't know anyone who capitalizes He or Him unless it is referring to deity. So I can't imagine why anyone would use He to refer to Satan, and not use He or Son to refer to Jesus. If someone does, it may indicate cluelessness/carelessness regarding correct grammar, or it may indicate warped theology.

I am always aware that I capitalize "God and Jesus" but when I spell adventist I can't bring myself to hit the cap key :-)

Bb, adventist is another word where I forget, or just do not want to, to capitalize.

I feel the same way! I've actually heard this refered to as "giving satan the middle finger of grammer". LOL

Unfortunately, my email program automatically capitalizes adventist.

I attend a Bible Study through BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) and it's held at a First Christian church. We sing hymns from this church's hymnal and they don't capitalize "he", "his" or "him" when referring to God. Kind of urks me!!

I wonder why they don't capitalize when referring to His name?

I heard a while ago that the scribes who would write copies of the Old Testament Scriptures would use a new pen everytime they came to the reference or name of God! Talk about keeping His name sacred and holy!! I think we've lost something along these years in regards to keeping His name respectful - even if it is through grammar!

I think the "deal" with capitalization is related to the NIV version. It came out in the very late 70s (I think 79?--not sure), and for some reason it didn't capitalize any pronouns. As the NIV grew in popularity, more and more people began to use it as a reference when they wrote articles for a variety of venues.

In order to be consistent with the Scripture version they were using, various magazines adopted a new "style sheet" that also did not capitalize the pronouns referring to God. When I was working for Adventist Today in the mid and late 90's, for example, NIV was the most commonly used version when quoting texts, and the magazine adopted a style sheet that did not capitalize the pronouns.

Now, the NASB always capitalizes, and I believe the ESV also does. I find myself moving back to capitalizing the pronouns. For one thing, grammar books continued to teach capitalizing pronouns referring to God, and moreover, since leaving Adventism and really coming to know Jesus, I viscerally cringe at "commonizing" the references to God.

So, I suspect that the lack of capitals is related to the NIV and its influence and the "need" to keep periodicals consistent. I know that I feel the need to capitalize as my personal statement!

In theology a little g-god is referred to as a false god or imaginary god.
The true God being being spelled with a little g would be off kilter in a Bible or anywhere else for that matter.
I don't use the NIV at all and never have. I use the NKJV for daily reading extensively as it has good flow and style.
Since I have attempted writing whole books and then having to edit my awful writing I find myself paying attention to good style (or lack thereof) and word usage.
Since I am learning to write with good style as I go I find it makes my work much easier reading even to me. It saves a lot of wear and tear when I go to edit the work also.
As to the respect part I have a friend that reads that infernal Clear Word thing and that's what irritates me no end.
