The following passage was part of my morning reading. It covers an old topic, the test of a true prophet of God. I believe it would be good to take another look even if it is not a Christmas Eve topic. Perhaps we can find some new insights by looking at the context.

(The goal of looking at context is why I am posting this passage without the verse numbers.)

These are the words of Moses, speaking to the Hebrew people just before his death and just before they cross over the Jordan River. He is instructing them on how to recognize a true prophet of God and what to do if such a pretender is found to be false, not of God.

quote:

Deut. 18:15-22 KJV
The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not. And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken. I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

Here are some of my observations:

1. Since Adventist theologians teach that the Mosaic Law still applies to them and much of the promises directed to the Hebrew people apply to them, it would be consistent with their theology to apply Moses very words on how to test and recognize a true prophet of God. It is my experience that they apply a multitude of "tests" but avoid this one.

2. The test, given in this passage, is that a true prophet's words when speaking in the name of God will always come true….100% of the time. I have never heard of any Adventist making this test and responding accordingly.

3. A prophet who speaks words not commanded by God to speak is under a sentence of death. Since it is clear that Ellen spoke many things that contradict Scripture….well you see the problem here!

So, are there more insights that can be derived out of this passage?

The last sentence says, "Thou shalt not be afraid of him". How many people still fear EGW because of what she wrote about on so many subjects. I am no longer afraid of her.

Phil and Diana

Thanks for sharing this. I agree with Diana's comment that we no longer fear her threats. One of Ellen's frequent themes can be summarized in two words: "without excuse."

Her threatenings have held people whom I love in spiritual bondage for their entire lives. Once we really take God at his word in Deut 18, and honestly apply the test of a true prophet to Ellen, much of adventism crumbles because it's not built on Christ, the true foundation.

Diana L.,

I love your observation. One I totally missed, yet it is the most important part of the whole passage.

Thanks and Merry Christmas,

P.S. The ham (hickory smoked, spiral cut & already cooked) is warming up in the oven. The yams are about to be 'candied'. Fresh bread will soon come out of the bread maker. One grandson is here. Our son soon will arrive along with another grandson. We are certainlly blessed. Jesus Christ makes it even more special.

And, think about the people who lived and worked with her back then! They were afraid to question anything she said! Too bad some of them were held in such bondage by her!
