Don't know if others have heard this yet, but the Conference Office building in Spokane had a serious fire today. As of a couple of hours ago, they were saying that at least half of it had burned, possibly more before it is over. It seems to have started in the bookstore area. No one was hurt or injured. It started about 5:am. You can google this and read more about it. Maybe updated by now.

Being a retired fire chief / fire fighter I discovered some pictures of the fire. For anyone interested here's the link:

Some good friends of our drove by the fire on the way to church this morning. We could see the smoke in the distance from our place.

Here is more on the Fire.

LcrCrabtree,

I'm concerned about a fire hydrant being 3000 ft. from a building, isn't that against code?

Jan,

I imagine that in this geographical location (it appears to be a rather rural area?) there is no code requirement regarding the placement of fire hydrants from buildings, or vice versa, as the case may be. In any case, a single fire hydrant would most likely not supply sufficient water for a fire in a building of this size. Once a building of this size is well involved in fire the 'fire load' is so great that it takes a steady volume of water to fight the energy released by the stuff that is burning. Without knowing the size of the building or the specific contents I can only guess, but I would guess that somewhere in excess of 1,500 gallons per minute would be required, and most hydrants in rural areas supply less than 1/2 of that volume - sufficient for a small fire or a house fire, but not nearly enough for a commercial building of common construction. Building sprinklers are the least expensive and most reliable way to go, and I am wondering why the church didn't have this building sprinklered, considering the value of the contents, some of which cannot be replaced.

Anyway, lots of speculation, which I don't like to engage in. But the question of the apparent lack of a sprinkler system keeps nagging me.

The buildings were in the outskirts of Spokane and some distance
from other buildings about 2 years ago when I stopped
by there with my granddaughter, but I would have thought they would have been within the city limits. I would have never guessed there would not be overhead sprinklers!! Its surrounded by pine trees and can be very dry in summer. Peggy
