There's a brand new chart at Jesus said follow me - a great web site. It's located here:

http://www.jesussaidfollowme.org/5-types-of-sermons.htm

Take a look at the first type of sermon. He said there are no (zero - zippo - nada) pro's to preaching that kind of sermon. Look at what he says the results are of that kind of preaching.

Think about the kinds of sermons you heard as an Adventist. I think that's the ONLY kind of sermon I heard there. I never heard a sermon that was a quality (or even poor) exegesis of a book of the Bible.

The sermons I heard were always topical, testimonies or prophecy seminar like - and there was always verses taken "here a little, there a little" Isaiah 28:9-10 style.

Wait a minute, I take that back. On Pathfinder Sabbath and when the school did their programs and kids preached, I did hear them talk about long passages of scripture a few times.

Please understand, I don't mean to fault any Adventist elder. They were taught to do it that way - and the doctrines really required it. I just found that chart quite interesting. It made me think.
