It is late and I cannot find the quote about buying jewelry on sale. I found another way to get it cheaper. Go to a pawn shop. There are a lot them here in the Las Vegas area and one can find some nice things at a very good price. You can also find some nice things at K-Mart or WalMart. Sometimes they are on sale also.
Happy Hunting Ladies and Thanks for your support.

Hi Diana,
Next month!

I read this a year or so ago and wondered if anyone else had read it. Notice the very first one.
I found it at this site:
http://www.afn.org/~afn43300/sda.html

YOU MIGHT BE AN SDA IF...

… The first thing you do when you are introduced to a woman is to look at her ears

… You went to a boarding academy that had two sidewalks: one for girls and one for boys (and the two never intersect)

… You have sex with your spouse, but you donít dance with him or her

… You got your sex education from Mom handing you a book by Harold Shyrock, MD.

… You feel mildly guilty reading the Song of Solomon

… You or someone you know has ever been "on social"

… You have heard that SDA girls donít drink, donít smoke, donít dance, but sure know how to kiss

… You ever wondered if the earth will last long enough for you to get a boy/girl friend

… You wonít watch a movie until it comes out on video

… You went to banquets instead of dances in high school

… You know who is engaged by asking for the time

… You look at someoneís hands, see no ring, and still wonder if they are married or not

… You see a watch on somebodyís right arm, and you wonder whether they are engaged, or just left-handed

… Your first date was to a vespers

… You know how to play poker with Bible author cards and wheat thins

… You have ever looked for angels outside a movie theater

… You have all the "Egypt to Canaan" answers memorized

… You know how to turn any sport into a Sabbath sport (Bible verse ping pong, Bible verse basketball, Bible verse footballóthe winner of each point must recite a Bible verse. "Jesus wept" may be used only once.)

… You participate in any kindof sport on Sabbath, but claim you donít enjoy it

… You know how to play Rook, but have never played Hearts or Bridge

… You wonít play poker or bridge, but stay up in the wee hours Saturday night playing Rook or Make-A-Million

… You wait until youíre outta town to go see a movie

… You still feel guilty when you shower on Sabbath

… On Sabbath you catch yourself telling kids, "You may wade, but donít swim."

… On Sabbath you as a kid can paddle around the pool/lake, but not splash, jump, or dive

… You can calculate sundown in Lincoln City from the schedule printed in the Gleaner for Portland

… You know that the bells ringing on Saturday evening in Loma Linda are the "all clear"

… You define "lay activities" as a Saturday afternoon nap

… You deliberately look for work in hospitals because Sabbath work there is "justified"

… You find yourself counting down the seconds that you can watch your favorite show on Friday evening before sundown

… You hate seeing sundown Saturday night because it means you have to wash the accumulated dishes from Sabbath

… You donít make up your bed on Sabbath

… You have a feeling of satisfaction getting home Friday at least 5 minutes before sundown

… You find yourself counting down seconds before sundown Saturday evening

… You get frustrated when the sun doesnít go down early on Saturday night

… You go to Sizzlerís Friday afternoon to pay for Sabbath dinner

… You go out for lunch after church, but put it on your credit card so you donít actually pay for it on Sabbath

… You set the VCR on Friday afternoon to catch the big Saturday football game... and then smugly watch it after sunset (Saturday night)

… You wonder whether videotaping a program on Sabbath and watching it on Sunday constitutes a sin

… You have ever gone on a nature hike on a Sabbath afternoon

… Friday and Saturday are your busiest days of the week

… The words "Sabbath" and "Saturday" are interchangeable, depending on who you are talking with at the time

I attend the Evenganical Lutheran and in the creed we acknowledge the holy catholic church. Notice the small "c". In the Misouri Synod they say the creed as the "holy Christian church". In the Catholic church they say, " the holy Catholic church", notice the large "C". Yes, in the Lutheran church, every Lutheran church I've been to and that is quite a lot of them already, we do the sign of the cross and it is a very respectful motion. The pastor gave a sermon on it one week saying that movement is in our nature, we sway to music, we tap our foot to keep the rythum of toons we hear, we rock back and forth our babies to sooth them, dance, movement is in our essence from our creation and the sign of the cross is a reverant movement.

Leigh,
I second and third the comments above: Go for it! Get your ears pierced!! It doesn't really hurt. As someone else said above, I didn't get why earrings and necklaces were forbidden, but someone can wear a big guady pin or a very expensive fashion watch.

Okay, Leigh, I will be looking for a posting for when you get your ears pierced. It really does not hurt. I had both my ears done at the same time to minimize what ever pain there was and it was not much.
While I was still an SDA I remember taking a course at church on the Testimonies of EGW. I read in one place where she said we should not wear any gold, silver, "jewelry" on our clothes, so I gave all mine pins to the Goodwill. I am so happy that God has given me freedom now to be the woman he wants me to be.
I like the list of "you are an SDA if...". I recognize a lot of them. It would be funnier if it were not so true.

They're pierced! I couldn't even wait until my birthday. I was driving by the mall the other day and thought, I'll just go get it done now. Thanks for everyone's encouragement!! It's amazing what a big deal it is to some Adventists (even us formers).

Hey Leigh, Let me be the first to congratulate you. Getting it done does gives a certain freedom
to me and I hope to you also.
Happy Early Birthday present to yourself.
God Bless you as you continue to follow Him and become the woman He wants you to be.

Congratulations, Leigh! Isn't it fun? And Pheeki, it does sound as if things are slowly changing with your husband. (How fun for your girls re: the piercing!)

I have to admit that when it comes to wearing any type of jewelry I like the real thing. I do not have a lot of jewelry, but what I have is real. It reminds me that God made it and not man. Of course I have only myself right now to care for. I have a grandson, for whom I buy all kinds of things, clothes especially.
Leigh, have fun with your earrings.
Pheeki, have fun with your children. They go through your life only once. I had only one, a boy, and I miss him, but he is doing what he is supposed to be doing. Living a life apart from Mom.

Freedom! When I realized that I was no longer employed by the church, that my income was no longer threatened by judgements passed on my lifestyle, I had to consider what I wanted to do with my freedom. I had to determine what was really me. Probably because I am older, I decided not to make any changes that stressed me. The habits of a lifetime do not have to be changed if I am comfortable with them. When I embraced that thought then I was really free. I did not get my ears pierced, neither did I buy any jewelry--I didn't want to spend the money for the good stuff and I didn't like the cheap stuff. But I do enjoy wearing a real pearl necklace that was a gift. I became part of a society that often drinks wine for communion, for Friday evening meals. I have no problem with their drinking, but I don't drink. I have never had more than an occassional taste of alcohol and I don't like the taste. I decided that just because I was free, I was not going to be pressured into changes that I did not want.

The point of all this is for those of you who are just coming out of Adventism with all its does and don'ts. Find out who you are in the Lord and be yourself. There is nothing wrong with the Adventist lifestyle unless a person is badgered into it or thinks they are working their way to heaven.

Welcome, Sharon. Isn't it great to have the freedom to choose? I, too, am older so so I've made fewer changes probably than someone younger. I'm finding myself way more comfortable with all styles and types of congregations. I really do enjoy my pierced ears however, after thinking about it for a year.

Praise God...

Praisegod, I hope you get a lot of really pretty earrings. Under the umbrella of His salvation, God has given us numerous choices. He has given each person the freedom to be themselves while still living a life submitted to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is a God-like action to welcome rather than judge the great variety of choices that fall under the Biblical guidelines of a life that is pleasing to God.

Very well put Sharon,

I always think of creation as a comparison to this. I believe God loves variety. He created thousands of kinds of trees, and grass, and even fungi, not just one, so why should he want all human beings to behave in exactly the same way?

Variety is far more interesting.

Sharon, I too am older. In one of my posts above I gave my age. I thank God for the freedom to choose. He has graciously taught me to be accepting of all kinds of things, from clothes styles to congregations and individuals. God started teaching me who I am 20 years ago when I joined a 12 step program. I just realized that the other day.
God ia an awesome God.
