Great points Dd. Though I'm not sure if I like the idea of being a "'former' friend".

Yes, SDA's generally exhude very superior attitude because they have the truth, all truth and by that reasoning everyone else, including Christians not only have error but are all error. Generally this attitude stems from their truth of the Sabbath issue. Once, that topic is delt with then this attitude continues to intenisify when the topics of the state of the dead and their infamous health message comes into conversation. SDA's generally, and I'm giving only my own personal observation on this, generally SDA's lack in humility. We can read the words of Jesus and find no teaching of His about the necessity of keeping Sabbath but we will find a lot on the desire of Jesus to see within us a humble and contrite heart. John, you are the one who mentioned above that people who leave SDA'ism leave for reasons other than a desire of truth, implying that people leave because of feeling wronged or hurt by this person or that person over some issue other than Bibical truth. Yet, that is really the reason how come so many people do eave Adventism. And, you have these stories above telling you how come those on here have left and you haven't acknowledged these testemonies. Your moniker is Truthseeker. Well, you have sought out an gotten the truth on here how come those on here have left SDA'ism. I would like to challange you for one month to read the Bible and only the Bible, especially the words of Jesus, Romans and Galations and don't use a Bible that is underlined or referenced with SDA highlights or the Clear Word Bible. Don't use any spiritual guides except for the Bible. Pray and ask the guidence of he Holy Spirit in leading you to truth as your name is Truthseeker. Frankly, I have met SDA's who insist that if anyone would really take on this challange then the person would become a SDA. I, however believe it is just the opposite, that if a SDA was to take up this callange he'd have to chuck Adventism. Your name is Truthseeker and you are on the right website to help with you seeing truth.

"Obedience is the result of true rependence...". Again, let's take the words of Jesus to know obedience to Him. I will give a few off the top of my head as I don't have the Bible handy. "I was naked and you gave me clothes to wear. I was hungry and you gave me food to eat. I was in prison and you came to visit me." "You have heard it said,'You shall love your neighbor but hate your enemy', But, I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persucate you...." "Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in Heaven". "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also". "Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?..." "Strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness and these things will be added unto you". "Do not judge, that you may be judged..." "Ask and it will be given unto you; search and you will find, knock and the door will be opened. ..." "Beware of false prophits who come to you in sheeps clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. Are grapes gathered from thornes or figs from thistles?..." These are just a few samples from the teachings of Jesus. NOWHERE in the teachings of Jesus is the seventh day, Sabbath told to be observed, or that certain foods and drinks are to be forbidden or certain clothing must not or must have to be worn. And, these are the three biggies within the Adventist religion and those three go contrary to what Jesus taught. I do though believe the Bible does address the Adventist church. It is mentioned in 1 Timothy 4:1-3, which says, "Now the Spirit expressly says that in the later times some will renounce the faith by paying attention to deciteful spirits and teachings of demons, through the hypocrisity of liars whose consciousnesss are seared with a hot iron. They forbid marriage and abstinance from food, which God created to be rceived with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected povided it is recieved with thanksgiving, for it is sanctified by God's word and prayer". Did you read that? "Diceteful spirits". EGW is called by SDA's The Spirit of Prophecy. Often SDA's won't even use EGW's name, they just refer to her as The Spirit of Prophecy. "Forbiding marriage". Did you know that EGW said the faithful should not get married? Yes, because they had to finish up the work that God had given them so they could hurry up the second coming of Jesus. "Abstaincence of foods", well, we know the DA position on what is allowed and what isn't alowed to be eaten. Earlier in the passage I quoted is mentioned "the hyprocisity of liars". Well, we know EGW stole a lot of her writings and the SDA church has been lying about it ever since. And the passage above says that everything created by God is good and should be recieved with thanksgiving. Yep, everything. Read it for yourself.

I'm away from home, so I can't reference this at the moment, but isn't there somewhere in the book of Acts, Colossians or Romans where the Apostle Paul warns us to stay away from groups "that think they're the only ones that have the truth"? Mmmmm. Sounds like he might be speaking about our friends the sda's. I'll look it up tonight and reference it tomorrow. But maybe someone on this forum might know where this text is found.

This might be off the conversation, but fit under the topic heading I think...

The sda's who live across the street from our friends who've also studied out this year, are our classic examples of adventism run (amuck or right on parr...I'm never sure which). They present us with countless chuckles and great insight to our own pecularities as former adventists...especially baggage to drop.

Anyway, over Christmas the Mrs came over to our friends house and was talking (which btw for 7 years she has only done when she wants to borrow something) and told them of how thankful she was of God watching out for her. Apparently she's been wanting a leather coat quite badly for awhile. Finding one on a clearance sale, she oo'd and ah'd until she finally had herself talked into the "extravegance". As she was proceeding to checkout, she was feeling the soft texture and happened to look at the label and saw that it was pig skin. Well, she dropped it like a hot potato, and rushed home to shower.

We had a good laugh- not so much at her, but the religion that condones treating others badly, but by avoiding certain things, or by eating only "healthy foods" you can attain righteousness.

Well anyway...thought you guys would appreciate the irony...

Esther, you gave me a good chuckle! That's just downright pathetic in a sort-of perversely satisfying way!

Thanks!

Esther,
I got a good belly laugh over the coat made of pigskin. It would even be funnier if it was not so pathetic. I am so thankful, I no longer have to be like that. God you are awesome.

That is a funny and and story abot the coat. I, too, was taught that it is a sin to even touch a pig. I had a friend whose family had a pet pig. The pig loved to b petted. I was young and mentioned to m family about what a sweet pet this pig was and how much she liked to be petted. I was told that since I didn't know any better and I'd already petted the pig there was on taking back past behaviors but that it is a sin to touch a swine so I was not to pet my friends pig ever again. I remember thinking that was really stupid, it wasn't like I was going to eat her, I just wanted to chuck her between the ears. So, I just did whatever I wanted to do and never again mentioned it. But, really, in the laws against the uclean meats doesn't it say not to touch the swine? I think it does. Wouldn't that be included in those 613 OT laws? And, does it make any sense at all to wear the leather of a cow or deer but not the leather of a pig? There's just no logic to it. I think suvere Adventism leads one into the rhelm of suvere phobias.

I agree Susan,
Let's see...while an adventist I was taught to be afraid of: catholics, pigs, meat, sunday, end-times, death, toothpaste and other items that contained pork products, it took so much time grocery shopping if I was looking for something new as I had to check all the ingredient labels, movies/theatres, dancing, wine/those who drank it, ...anyway, the list could go on I'm sure.

I'll borrow Diana's phrase that HE IS SO AWESOME!

Amen, Esther!

A couple of years ago our neighbors behind us acquired a pot bellied piglet. She was awfully cute and would run to the fence to be petted. Richard especially enjoyed petting that pig because it was such symbol of freedom for him! Inevitably, the pig grew up. She's still back there, but she's become quite the rotund porker with two rather shocking curved tusks emerging from the sides of her formerly cute little black snout!

Ah, well--

Did you all ever hear calling toes "piggies"? It's a little "foot" game I thought was universal, and I do it with Jonathan sometimes....this little piggie went to market, this little piggie stayed home....etc. Every time B is around when i do that he just gets unglued and says "they're not piggies, their toes". I guess even the term is a no-no.... :-)

Oh yes, we did the "this little piggie" game growing up, completely unchanged. I even remember when I was very young, when it came to the piggie that had roast beef, wondering what that was. I came from an extremely conservative and vegetarian SDA family, but that didn't keep us from doing silly things like that. We even knew all the nursery rhymes and the Santa Claus stories, but we also knew at a very young age, the difference between reality and made up things. I guess B is even stricter than we were.

Ha! Yes, we did the "piggie" thing even though I had never had roast beef and didn't really have a clue what it was.

Under the Law, it was only dead unclean animals that could not be touched, not live ones.

Did you know that EGW actually said that it was a sin to touch ANY dead animal?

"The Lord would bring His people into a position where they will not touch or taste the flesh of dead animals." (Counsels on Diet and Foods, page 411, paragraph 3.)

Therefore, according to EGW it IS a sin to touch any leather products, etc., even from a cow!

I think that must vary with the individual. We did lots of the "this little piggy went to market . . ." when I was growing up. Never thought of it in terms of pigs particularly.

All this talk about pigs reminds me of a comment I heard from someone debating with a historic SDA about the ever-changing manipulation and presentation of the unique SDA doctrines over the years. It went like this:

"You can put all the lipstick you want on a pig, but that don't turn her into a prom queen".

I really shocked my pastor this last Tuesday night. Tuesday night is potluck and Bible study. Somebody had donated a big ham and ham is one thing I really like. I was sitting by the pastor and I said 'And to think that for years I believed that if I ate this little piggy I was on a greased chute straight into hell!'. His look was one of total shock! He didn't know SDA's didn't believe in eating unclean meats. He said 'How about prime rib?'---I said, 'Nope, I've always eaten that!'. :-)

Remember the song, "Oh, I wish I was an Oscar Meyer weiner, that is truly what I want to be. For if I was an Oscar Meyer weiner then a happy little weiner I'd be." Well, as a kid we sang it this way, "Oh, I wish I was a Loma Linda Linkette, that is truly what I want to be, For if I was a Loma Linda Linkette them a happy little Linkette I'd be". An anther one-when I was a kid "this little piggy went to market, this little piggy ate roast beef", etc. was "this little Linette went to market, this little linkette ate vegeburgers", oh well, that's life in Adevntism.

I was wishing the other night that I could find an old e-mail entitled 'You know you're an SDA if--' followed by a long list of things....like;

If you know how to use the word 'Philistine' as an insult.

If anyone has called you a 'Jesuit' and it was an insult.

Does anybody have that list?
