As a PK all my childhood here in the Midwest, I have been aware of many a shunning or worse for a non suspecting visitor who shows up in church wearing any jewelry. Also, in our churches, ìweî never proceeded with a baptism until the convert realized the barrier that jewelry brought to their relationship with God, and would ìvoluntarilyî give it up :-) My grandmother bought me a gold watch for Christmas on year, and I took a lot of grief for that one even. In the academy (WA) I know of many girls who would end up with infections from doing the pin piercing late at night. And when/if faculty found out, there were strict measures taken to subdue the rebellion. (Sigh)

Leigh, what year did your husband graduate? I actually left TA and went to the evil rival SVA (Shenandoah Valley Academy) for my final year of high school. (Unforgivable!) :-) In tretrospect, maybe I should've stayed at TA. Oh well!

Colleen, that's very interesting insight about Academy staff having some personal issues that you might not notice as "just a student". As a student you look up to authorities generally without realizing that their discipline may be energized by motivations other than your improper behavior. I feel something kind of 'pop' inside of me, releasing... it's part of healing and being freed from spiritual abuse.

He graduated in '83. When did you graduate from SVA?

Hey Folks, I grew up in Southern California Adventism in the 40s, 50s, 60s and the adventist church was very conservative. When I graduated from LLU in 1963 there was no jewelry worn by any one. Girls wore skirts/dresses all day sabbath and we never wore slacks at school. It was the same when I attended La Sierra the 3 years before I went to LLU. When I visited my Mom in LL, about a year before she died(June 2002), I was shocked at the dress of the men and women in the church because it was so different from what I learned growing up in So CA. So, Southern California adventists used to be very conservative. They are not the same now.
Thank God, I am no longer an Adventist with all its baggage.
God, you are awesome.

SDA is not the only church that frowns on jewelry. I spent 12 years in Church of God which is a very legalistic denomination. And it's not as bad here in Northern California as it is in the Bible Belt. The women were frowned upon for wearing too much jewelry but not so much if they wore it modestly. The funny part is that some of the men were like peacocks with the jewelry they wore. Big watches, rings, etc. Vest chains and watch chains were big with some also. And this is out here in the "heathen west". I understand the double standard for men and women is much more distinct elsewhere. CW

Haha, I graduated SVA in 1996.

Guess that reveals a few things. :-)

Cw,
Thanks for bringing up those important points. Legalism is not just an SDA sin. In fact, parallels exist between Adventism and other parts of fundamentalism. Many on this board have commented about how much many other churches are similar to Adventism. Some on this board are very lucky to find good evangelical churches that distinguish themselves from Adventism.

Hey, does anyone remember reading Kathie Lee's autobiography? I forgot the name of it. But she was briefly married to an SDA who was a musician. She was scheduled to sing at an SDA church and they put up posters of her. She mentioned that they used "tape" to cover up the earrings in her ears!!!!! That's borderline psychotic if u ask me!

I had heard that Kathie Lee was married to an SDA musicianóI think it was Paul Johnson.

Tape over the earrings, huh?...

Sigh.
