The Seventh-day Adventist Church, at 2236 Parker Street in Berkeley, California, cites religious freedom in its fight with noise-hating neighbors. The hipsters, that gather routinely in the church basement, keep the Berkeley Police Department very busy. Neighbors are complaining about the drugging, drinking, and loud rock concerts.

The SDA pastor has hired an attorney to defend their activities under the guise of "separation of Church and State." Read all about this bazaar news story at: www.eastbayexpress.com/issues/2003-10-15/music2.html

Dennis, what a bizarre story, indeed! Once again I'm face-to-face with the question: What's central? I think Pastor Pickell is exchanging a focus on the gospel of Jesus Christ for community service. I know from watching the young people at our church (who often have non-Christian visitors) that if Jesus is honored, he will draw hungry hearts to himself.

There was a telling line in that story--this venue was started partly to bolster a flagging church. I don't think the rock concerts are going to fix that problem.

Praise God for Jesus!

Colleen
