I needed to get some groceries today, and as I was strolling through the store I added a six-pack of Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat, a very tasty brew. As I exited the aisle, I ran into an SDA friend I hadn't seen in a while. I said, "Hi," as did he, but I was amused as he couldn't take his eyes off the conspicuous item in my cart. I certainly don't mean to provide a stumbling block to my fellow Christians, but I'm sure I'll be fodder for the church gossip next Saturday :-)

I am laughing, because I can imagine his amazement and what he will say to his fellow church members about you. His eyes must have bugged out. To bad he does not have the freedom you have. In other words to bad he does not know Jesus Christ.

I am laughing too! I have noticed over the years while shopping if you met an SDA in the grocery store, they ALWAYS looked in your cart no matter what. They always tried not to be obvious, but it really was obvious! After all, you might have something in there like meat or maybe a brew or something that They thought was questionable.
I am so very thankful the veil has been lifted and I can see the TRUTH. Praise God! Coming to truly know Jesus Christ is the great thing ever!!!! |

It is really a very heavy & difficult burden to be constantly judging people by what they do, what they wear, what they eat, what they might or might not have in their fridge at home. You worry about whether or not you should associate with them, whether or not they'll somehow rub off on you or your children. You're always on the defensive, unconsciously looking for error, and you can't really relax. The power of "error" or what you perceive as "sin" in others seems more powerful than the ability of the Lord who lives in you to overcome it. Even though you know the "truth", you don't feel safe. Instead *because* you know the "truth", you feel like you need to be extra careful to keep from falling. You would feel safer if you *didn't* know so much "truth"!
Praise God for setting us free and setting us at rest in His Son's righteousness! Praise God for life by the Spirit of the Son, a Holy Spirit so powerful that we need not worry about the darkness putting out His light, even in us! |

Here is a funny story.
I always tried to scope out the area before I entered a checkout line at the local grocery because 9x out of 10...a church member would be in close vicinity. Anyhoo...one day I was buying beer for my husband (a suitcase, mind you!) and I am heading to an aisle and lo and behold I roll in right behind the pastor! So I think- I'll just slide this beer under the conveyor belt until he leaves. I am able to do this unnoticed...I start putting my stuff on the conveyor and say my hello's to the pastor...and then I hear from behind me...
"Mam, mam...you forgot your beer." I ignore them...they get louder..."Mam, your beer is down here." I was forced to acknowledge it and thank the person!
Mission "Hide the Beer" unsuccessful.
I used to purposely buy beer at the grocery on Sabbath because I knew I was safe...that would still work for any of you SDA beer drinkers lurking here. I never got caught.
You are right about the SDA looking in the grocery cart...I too have been guilty of this...it's like you can't help it. Maybe you want to see they are sinners like you!

This reminds me of a time I went to a partystore/gas station to buy an adult beverage on the Sabbath, (so I wouldn't get caught) and lo and behold there was an SDA church member in there buying gas!! Our eyes met for a second and then she acted like she never knew me or saw me. I kept staring at her then, wanting her to acknowledge me, but it didn't happen.
Every former I have talked to always says that they have better relationships with people now. Not just other Christians, but people in general. You can be friends with them because you are not saved by what YOU do or did making you better, but because of what He did, making you equal.
(Galations 3:28 "We are all one")
Does this make sense? Can anyone here relate??

Pheeki, years ago a lot of restaurants gave half-price meals to cops-not as many nowadays but I'm retired now so I don't mind sharing this. The most embarrasing thing though was when the cashier would yell to the manager, who always seemed to be in the far corner of the restaurant at the time, "I NEED THE HALF-PRICE KEY FOR THE HIGHWAY PATROLLLLLL". Your story reminded me of that. It's not just SDA members that look in your grocery cart though. I guess the best thing to do is just invite them over "for a cold one" and hope they get over it. CW |

Yes, Timmy, I can understand that. I can go out with friends or visit them in their house and not feel "different" because I do not drink, not very often that is. I no longer feel that I need to save them, which I never could do anyway.

In our kids' Confirmation class for this week, the lesson is about "Your Body is a Temple." It asks "How do you think 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 relates to the following: Alcohol, Smoking, Diet Pills, Steriods, Sugar, Caffeine, Body Piercing, Porn, Violent Video Games, Spending six hours a day online"
Well, one of those items in the list relates to sexual immorality. I just can't understand why people don't read the context and see the obvious that these verses are speaking only of staying sexually pure. Surely there are other verses that could be used to encourage a healthy lifestyle. It just sends the wrong message that you can use a verse or two removed from the context to make it say what you want it to say. That sure sounds familiar...
At least pickles and ice cream wasn't on the list, and at least they didn't say by consuming these things you're breaking the "Do not kill" commandment. So it could be worse. Believe me, we will be pointing out the reality of these verses to our kids. |

Raven, I also get frustrated when people take that passage out of context. And ice cream actually would be included in that list, under "Sugar"...
As for verses that encourage a healthy lifestyle, I can't think of any...

You are so right; the context is referring to sexual immorality. In fact (I know you already know this!) verse 18 specifically links this passage to sexual immorality by stating that all sins besides immorality are "outside" the body, but sexual sins are sins against one's body. Immmorality is a direct offense to the indwelling Holy Spirit.
Ephesians 5:1-12 is a much more comprehensive look at behaviors inappropriate for Christ-followers. Also 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, Colossians 3:5-6 and Titus 3:1-11.
Your girls are so fortunate to have you and Rick to teach them these things at home!

Nicole, I was wondering the same thing. In the past we've had the discussion about tithe, and the response was that they don't teach mandatory tithing but see nothing wrong with encouraging applying the principle as a worthwhile option. If that gives any indication, I wouldn't be surprised if the response in this case would be that while that is the original meaning, there can always be multiple meanings and applications. And it would be so beneficial to teach kids to take good care of their health.
At this point, I'm leaning towards only making sure our kids are clear on the real meaning. If they want to pass on the information to anyone, so be it. I'm afraid we're getting a reputation for having overly-sensitive heresy detectors! It's hard to know when to speak up and when to let things slide. |

This topic has been fun to read. Although I do not inbibe "strong drink" I now fully appreciate there is no biblical prohibition against it.
I can relate so well to the shopping cart scanning that seemed so common among our Adventist family. I never had to hide Alcohol in my cart, however I do remember burying the coffee in amongst the veggies, and whole grain bread..... like how absolutely stupid!
Thankfully I no longer live like that.

Randy, that is so funny! Yes, I used to hide the coffee, too! When you shop in Loma Linda (or even Redlands!), believe meóyou've got a good chance of running into someone who would scan your cart!
Raven, I don't blame you for leaning toward privately instructing your girls. That's probably what I would do as well under the circumstances. I totally understand that hypersensitive "heresy detector"!

Yesterday I found out we have a mutual friend (SDA). When I was asked how we know each other I explained that you and I have had a similar spiritual journey. Since she knows I am no longer SDA I think I may have thrown her a curve ball as her eyebrows raised in what seemed to be genuine surprise - I have been praying my remarks were not hurtful to you in anyway.
